EARTH DAY  AND MEMORIAL DAY Author Events

"Envisioning Sustainability" with Peter Berg
Come and hear activist Peter Berg share his thoughts and read from his new book.

Peter Berg has been a continuing source of innovative ideas for ecological activists for nearly forty years.  Both enlightening and surprising, his writings are a primary source for the history of ecological thinking. Berg has been called the "father of bioregionalism" and " a thorn in the side of the environmental movement." His perceptive analyses are always exciting, pushing the limits of the ordinary. Envisioning Sustainability guides the reader through the awakening of both environmentalism and bioregionalism and discusses urban sustainability and ecological policy with vision, candor, and humor.

How Can Making Products Locally From Recyclables Solve Local Economic Challenges?

On Wednesday March 11th from 7:30-9:30pm Planet Drum Foundation and CounterPULSE’s Shaping San Francisco, will present a panel discussion and question-and-answer session that is free and open to the public.  It will be held at CounterPULSE, 1310 Mission Street (near 9th Street), San Francisco.

Neil Seldman, President of the Washington, D.C.-based Institute For Local Self-Reliance, will spearhead the first panel discussion in San Francisco on “Local Remanufacturing Our Way out of the Recession.” Peter Berg, Planet Drum Foundation director, and Kevin Drew, Zero Waste Program Coordinator for the San Francisco Department of the Environment, will join Seldman on the panel, along with local remanufacturing entrepreneurs. Alemany Community Garden organizer, Antonio Roman-Alcala, will facilitate the question and answer period.

“The purpose of this event is to inform the public on our need to make products locally from local recyclables.” said Peter Berg.  “Remanufacturing provides meaningful work, closes the energy loop, and stimulates creativity. It is a practical response to the economic slump that builds on our physical and human resources.”

We invite anyone who is interested in jobs, the environment, sustainability, alternatives to landfills, recycled art objects, and public policy to attend.

City-Scale Ecocity Initiatives

How about largely conceived projects embedded in government and local economics to already have enormous potential and some very serious commitment? How far can they go toward what we are introducing here as an ‘urban fractal’ a piece, yet a functional whole within the city, or to actually transform the whole city by intent into an ecocity as thoroughly conceived as possible.  How “ecocity” can it get?

grfx09_s.gif (2301 bytes)Maruata Bioregional Celebration

Mid-December, 1998 — January, 1999
Maruata, Mexico

An Invitation from the Mexican "family" of bioregionalists to celebrate the New Year on the beach at Maruata, Michoacan.

While this is not an "official" bioregional gathering, it is an opportunity to spend time in a beautiful area on the Pacific coast of Mexico in the company of interesting folks from Mexico and around the world. In addition to informal opportunities for learning, inspiration and cultural exchange, some talking circles to discuss the possibility of organizing future bioregional events in Mexico are also planned.

SITE. Maruata is a rustic village about halfway between Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta. Until now, the local community has managed to withstand pressures to sell their communal land to commercial interests. The area is one of the few remaining nesting areas for endangered sea turtles and is also an iguana reserve. Imagine white sand beaches, tall cliffs, glorious sunsets, star- filled night skies and no telephones. But this paradisical setting is also plagued by ecological problems such as garbage, ground water pollution and habitat destruction, as well as social tensions caused by drug trafficking and other crimes. The Mexican bioregional "family" has been coming here for several years, trying to help to improve gray water systems, latrines, and trash collection, while at the same time contributing much needed cash to the local economy.
DATES. There are no set dates. People will probably begin arriving in mid-December and stay until mid-January and beyond. Come when you can and stay as long as you like.
CONDITIONS. Maruata is a small, remote village with minimal tourist infrastructure. There are no hotels and only a few rustic cabins for rent. The Christmas season is "prime time", so it is likely to be crowded until after the first of the year. Most people bring tents and camp on the beach. There are open-air restaurants serving a limited menu (mostly seafood, eggs, quesadillas, soft drinks and beer) and a small grocery store which sells snacks and some staples (bananas, canned juices, toilet paper, etc.) No doubt some "rainbow kitchens" will be organized, funded by passing the magic hat. The nearest telephone is 45 minutes away.
GETTING THERE. Maruata is a two-day drive from Mexico City and a full day's journey from Guadalajara. The nearest airports are in Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo or Colima City. Coming from Guadalajara or Mexico City, go to Colima City. From there take the bus to Tecoman. From Tecoman, take another bus or taxi to Maruata. The last bus leaves Tecoman around 6-7 pm. Another alternative is to go to La Placita by bus and take a taxi from there. Do not travel this road after dark!
WHAT TO BRING. Camping gear, plate, bowl, cup, utensils, musical instruments, biodegradable soap, beach clothes, towel, hat, sun block, personal first aid kit, including remedies for traveler's diarrhea. Weather is usually 65-85 degrees and sunny at this time of year, but rain is also a possibility.
A WORD OF CAUTION. Maruata is a poor community under a tremendous amount of economic and political stress. Visitors must be respectful of local customs (i.e., no nude bathing) and careful with their own belongings. Do not leave valuables unattended in your tent or on the sand. While the swimming is usually safe, use caution if the waves are high.

Planet Drum Foundation was the fiscal sponsor for this project about the California Delta. Just released, Planet Drum Foundation and William Stout Publishers invite you to visit these book signings.

The California Delta, which is the major source of water for Los Angeles and
the largest tidal estuary on the West Coast, is critical to the economy and ecology of California. It is one of the most contested landscapes in the United States, and its future is likely to be decided through a public process. Wolff uses a brief history, photographs, a lexicon, and a deck of narrative playing cards to present information about this important region in ways that are accessible to broad audiences. The book's goal is to spur discussion about the Delta's future.

John King described the project in the San Francisco Chronicle as " a calm new book so seductive that it drew me out to visit the weave of levees and sloughs east of Antioch for the first time in 14 years."

Berg works with ecological city groups in North and South America, Asia and Australia, and contributed to the 2005 UN "Green Cities" Conference of Mayors that produced The Urban Sustainability Accords, the most significant international ecological agreement since The Kyoto Protocols. He believes making cities ecologically sustainable will be at the forefront of 21st Century issues and will describe activities that can make this transformation possible.

Planet Drum Foundation initiated urban sustainability programs in Bahia de Caraquez, Ecuador including extensive revegetation with native species, appropriate renewable energy, city-wide composting, creation of a "wild park", cultural celebrations, and the first community Bioregional Education Program based on Berg's innovative essay, "Learning to Partner with a Life-Place".

LEARN ABOUT AND DISCUSS:

bullet

Half of the world's population now living in cities isn't merely demographically important. The greatest significance is learning to survive as an urban species, Homo sapiens urbanus.

bullet

For cities to be truly ecological they must be based on local ecology itself. A primary goal for city dwellers will be to restore and maintain bioregional natural systems such as watersheds, soil, and native plants and animals.

bullet

Cities are presently net consumers of resources and producers of garbage. They must increasingly become producers and reusers of what their residents need to survive.

Goldhaft's WATER WEB is a twenty minute performance with words and movement that celebrates water and describes our complex relationship to it. It has been described as a dance/narrative, a lyric poem, and a rap and movement eco-performance.  Pultzer prizerwinning poet and eco-philospher Gary Snyder says, "Judy Goldhaft's Water Web is a unique dance which delights and instructs, and takes down the arbitrary boundary between art and information..."

bullet

Planet Drum will be tabling in the "Kitchen Table" area at The Green Festival in San Francisco on November 5 & 6,2005.

bullet

Dharma Realm University presents A Special Lecture, Peter Berg speaking on "The Bioregional Basis of Ethic and Urban Sustainability" and Judy Goldhaft performing "Water Web" on November 6, 2005 at Doa Yuen (Confucius) Hall at The City of 10,000 Buddhas, 2001 Talmadge Road, Ukiah.

bullet

Peter Berg will speak on "The Bioregional Basis for Urban Sustainability" at SPUR's November 15, 2005 bag-lunch, 12:30-1:30pm at the SPUR (San Francisco Planning & Urban Association) offices, 312 Sutter Street, Suite 500, San Francisco. $5.00 SPUR non-member fee requested

This is Peter's only talk here in San Francisco this fall. You will learn in detail that for cities to be truly sustainable, they must be based on local ecology itself. "We must increasingly become producers and re-users of what our residents need to survive", emphasizes Berg. Peter will also be describing how "wild corridors" can be created here in San Francisco. There will be time for questions and discussion.

Bioregionalism with Peter Berg and David Room:
Responses to “Peak Oil”

This installment of the workshop will explore the “Peak Oil” phenomenon, also referred to as the End of Cheap Oil or the Second Half of the Oil Age that has been gaining currency with rising oil prices.  While economists generally believe that the market will moderate the effects of a declining oil supply by making investments in substitutes and alternatives more attractive, many people are very concerned that peak oil could bring about global recession and severely disrupt the supply chains upon which we rely.  Reflecting this concern, there is now a Peak Oil Caucus in the House of Representatives. In addition to explaining peak oil theory and its ramifications, this workshop will explore bioregional and community responses to peak oil and what we as citizens can do.

Peter Berg is Founder & Director of Planet Drum Foundation
Peter Berg directs Planet Drum Foundation, an educational and organizing group that publishes information, creates forums, and pursues research about the relationship between human culture and the natural processes of bioregions. He edited Reinhabiting a Separate Country: A Bioregional Anthology of Northern California, and co-authored A Green City Program for San Francisco Bay Area Cities and Towns. Visit www.planetdrum.org.
David Room is Director of Policy and Mobilization, Post Carbon Institute
Dave manages Post Carbon Institute’s policy and mobilization efforts at the municipal and community levels. He is also managing editor and an interviewer for Global Public Media, as well as a frequent lecturer.  He is co-author of Relocalize Now! Getting ready for Climate Change and the End of Cheap Oil (Spring 2006).  He has a MS in Engineering Economic Systems and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Stanford.
