On Monday, Planet Drum (PD) loaded up a truck with native fruit trees (220, to be exact) to deliver to the Bellavista community. Bellavista is one of the hillside neighborhoods that surrounds Bahía de Caráquez, and PD has been planting trees there for over ten years.
Many of the trees are already large with deep root systems that are helping to stabilize the precarious hillside, some already have prolific fruit production, and others are still seedlings taking root.
Residents clambered out of their homes to receive Almond, Avocado, Pechiche, Chirimoya, Guava de Vehuco, Guayaba, Mango, Cereza, Guanabano, and Tamarind trees, which they will plant in their backyards and patios.
Community participation is integral to the project, so it was delightful when one woman gave us Guanabano seeds which she had collected for us to take back to the greenhouse for continued tree production.
