Planet Drum Foundation held a reception and presentation about Bahia de Caraquez titled “Ecuador’s Ecological City” in San Francisco on December 8, 2000. The site was Fort Mason’s cozy renovated Firehouse, where refreshments were served and a raffle was held to raise funds.
Asmara Pelupessy, PDF’s administrative assistant and membership manager, welcomed everyone and Tamara Ribas, volunteer angel, acknowledged that food and raffle donations were mainly from organizations that are ecologically concerned and involved with Fair Trade.
Dr. Fernando Flores, Consul General of Ecuador, briefly described the nation’s environmental commitment and Planet Drum’s work in Bahia de Caraquez. Then Peter Berg, PDF’s Director, described the project in detail with slides of revegetation and other urban sustainability work that has been done so far. He concluded by announcing the creation of the Eco-Bahia Ecuador Support Group to directly assist future efforts to assist in building a bioregion-based ecological city.
