Focus:
We are a bioregional planning, regeneration and design collaborative located within the Western Ghats focused on indigenous system restoration, ecological revival, rewilding and strategic transformation.
Bioregion Description:
We are based in the Konkan Bioregion, one of the 8 bioregions within the Western Ghats ecoregion, and our work weaves across these interdependent regions. The other 7 are Malenadu, Tulunadu, Puzhinadu, Kudanad, Karkanad, Kuttanad and Venad. These bioregions are tremendously biodiverse and home to millions of species and systems and is home to a complex and dense network of rivers, lakes and backwaters. Characterised by its positioning between the mountains and the sea, it is a narrow strip of land that moves from steep hills to delta plains from East to West. The rich and heavy monsoon that visits the Indian subcontinent every year sheds most of its moisture in these regions as a result of its positioning. They are water abundant areas by its natural heritage, and are home to fast stream at one end and slow, wide winding rivers at the end. These bioregions go from intensely tropical to semi deciduous as we go from South to North and each one hosts a unique culture, all of them upholding thousands of years of indigeneity. The rivers and mountains shaped the microclimate, agro-traditions, culture, and practices. These 8 bioregions on the Western side of the Western Ghats, its wild wisdom, natural systems, wildlife, and human communities are deeply entwined and yet distinct.
