Planet Drum Foundation’s San Francisco Bay Area programs include educational and hands-on activities, including field trips and workshops, to guide adults, students, and teachers in exploring and learning about the region. Planet Drum’s whole-systems (bioregional) approach to identifying and understanding Northern California’s unique ecological qualities puts the emphasis on:
- observation and mapping natural characteristics
- exploring what makes Northern California distinct
- discussion of the interrelationships of natural systems
- hands-on restoration work or a walk through the site.
Participants gain an understanding of what we must do, individually and collectively, to restore and maintain healthy natural systems in San Francisco and the Bay Area.
Special Events

Donate your used clothes, books, furniture and more
Planet Drum Foundation greatly benefits from your donations to the Community Thrift Store in San Francisco of household items, books, records, furniture and clothing that you don’t want that are in good shape and it doesn’t cost you a penny!
When you drop off your stuff, ask that the proceeds from its sale be credited to Planet Drum Foundation:
- Our “charity code” is: 112
- Donations are accepted from 10 am to 5 pm daily.
- If there’s too much for you to handle — the store has pick-up service.

Planet Drum Foundation works to research, promote and disseminate information about bioregionalism, a grassroots approach to ecology that emphasizes sustainability, community self-determination and regional self-reliance. We believe that people who know and care about the places where they live will work to maintain and restore them.

Planet Drum Foundation doesn’t currently have any paying job opportunities. We do have internships and volunteer positions available (see below).
General Information for Interns and Volunteers
Since we are a small office interns generally take on specific projects, and gain a lot of valuable experience. Depending on your interests, and our needs, you might be working on editing and distributing publications, designing flyers and displays, or organizing an event. Other internship ideas are listed below and you can request a list more specific suggestions. If you’re interested in becoming an intern, please fill out the application below and return it with your resume. After we receive the application we’ll set up a phone or in-person interview.
We make a distinction between interns and volunteers. Interns have particular projects which they will complete in at least three months at about 20 hours per week. Volunteers may or may not have a special project. Most come in on a regular basis and arrange their schedules around other commitments. We also have volunteers who come in on an irregular basis for special projects and mailings. If you’d rather work as a volunteer than an intern, just contact us and we’ll arrange an orientation and a schedule for your hours.

Internships at Planet Drum Foundation: Rewarding Work, Unlimited Prospects
Through an internship at Planet Drum, you can gain new job skills, make contacts, and immerse yourself in the bioregional, ecological and urban sustainability scenes. We are happy to fill-out forms for college credit and write letters of recommendation at the conclusion of your internship period. Unfortunately Planet Drum cannot afford to pay interns. We can sometimes provide a small stipend for local travel. We ask for a three month commitment of your time at 20 hours per week. Intern projects are listed below. (Planet Drum also has openings for volunteers for from 3 to 15 hours a week.)

Run Planet Drum’s office with us by:
- researching and managing our resources files and database,
- sorting archival materials,
- organizing and maintaining the library,
- responding to telephone requests, or
- managing bulk mail parties.
Membership/Outreach Assistants
Explore the local, national, and international bioregional movement. Planet Drum has a membership of over 700 people and organizations from around the world who receive our newsletters and publications. Assist with:
- managing and updating our membership database,
- designing, producing, and editing membership mailings,
- processing information requests,
- distributing Planet Drum publications to bookstores, distributors, schools, and members; plus researching new distribution possibilities, or
- promoting new publications to libraries, schools, stores, and reviewers; plus compiling publicity for press kits.
Art and Design Assistant
Help with the design and layout for flyers, notices to members, project photo albums, the Planet Drum Pulse newsletter, or displays. Take photos, and/or make drawings for us.
Computer Specialist
If you have computer skills to share, our computers would be happy to entertain you.
Editorial Assistant
Planet Drum publishes a newsletter, books, and broadsides. Our current project can use your research, editing, proofreading, writing, production and design assistance.
Website/Calendar Assistant
Helping to update our online calendars & listings and adding graphics and text to this website provides opportunities to express your creativity as well as keeping you connected to the latest ecological/sustainable happenings around the Bay Area and the planet.
Fundraising Assistant
Lots of organizations have great project ideas. Of course, it takes $$$ to make these projects really happen. Help us by planning a fundraising event, researching funding sources, or assisting with member outreach.
